The rights of women under the threat

For today in Ukraine, on informal data, about sixty percent of women suffer from violence. Nevertheless the official statistics does not exist, and the position of the government concerning this problem remains for the public secret. At press conference in Kiev representatives of the Ukrainian Association of the International Amnesty (УАМА) have stated the concern a position of the Ukrainian government concerning a problem of violence against women.

Attempts of representatives УАМА to find out „with what there will go the Ukrainian delegation on 49th Session of the Commission of the United Nations concerning the status of women and whether will go there in general” have ended with failure. From the governmental structures of the answer to receive it was not possible, and in Office of the President have declared, that the position of delegation of Ukraine is confidential. Interestingly why?

Delegates, probably, have not wanted to reveal a secret and at the session and, most likely there have not gone. And can and have gone, but the position and have not declassified. At least participants of press conference have told, that in materials of session have found uniform performance of representatives from Ukraine.

Nevertheless Session of the Commission of the United Nations, which results the International Amnesty considers as the key moment in questions of observance and protection of the rights of women, has taken place and without active participation of the Ukrainian delegates.

According to representatives УАМА, Session work has been concentrated to several major questions: whether has reached the government of the consent or at least any progress in имплементации the Peking Declaration and the Platform of actions (the major documents concerning protection of the rights of the women accepted by the Fourth World Female conference of the United Nations which has taken place in Beijing in September, 1995); acceptances of the political Declaration of 49th session; acceptances of resolutions on the prevention of trade in women, about feminization of poverty and increase in an economic role of women and about creation of a post of the Special lecturer under discrimination laws concerning women.

Representatives УАМА have stated anxiety to that in the Declaration of 49th session is spoken nothing about protection of the rights of women. In their opinion, имплементация the Peking declaration, the Platform of actions and the Female convention of the United Nations should amplify mutually realisation of the rights of women, achievement of gender equality and powers of women.

Also in an operating time of 49th Session the delegation of the International Amnesty presented the report „Influence of the weapon on a life of women”.

"Women become much more often victims of some kinds of crimes because of a sex, in particular, than house violence or rape. Besides, considering, that women almost never buy, do not own and do not use fire-arms, they suffer from the armed violence is disproportionate often. Quite often affirms, that the weapon is necessary for protection of women and their families, whereas actually a situation opposite. Women do not want, that in their life there was a place to the weapon" - Denis Sirl, the head of department "International Amnesty" on public relations informed.

On March, 7th in Johannesburg there has passed press conference on which delegates of campaigns "we Will stop violence concerning women" and "the Weapon - under the control!" Have presented report substantive provisions.

In the report "Influence of the weapon on a life of women" examples of the most dangerous situations connected with armed violence concerning women in a family, a society, and also during a confrontation and during the postdisputed period are in detail considered. In the report a number of the actions used by the states for an establishment of the control over the weapon also is considered, thanking the different campaigns of the women directed against distribution of armed violence.

Representatives УАМА have noted certain positive shifts in the Ukrainian society concerning realisation of the rights of women. In particular, creation at Ministry of Coordination council from gender questions, ratification of all optional protocols by Ukraine to the Convention of the United Nations against discrimination, an adoption of law about the prevention of house violence.

Participants of press conference called representatives of the Ukrainian power and public figures publicly to sign the Global petition against violence, and to prove to that, that protection of human rights actually is a priority of the new power.
